How to make a cleaning schedule you will actually keep

Most cleaning schedules fail because they ask for too much on one day. A good schedule keeps daily jobs tiny, gives each cleaning day one or two rooms, and saves the big jobs for once a month or once a season.

  1. Start with the daily basics. Dishes, wiping the counters and a ten minute tidy stop mess from building up. Everything else can wait for its own day.
  2. Give each room its own day. Bathroom on Tuesday and bedrooms on Wednesday is easier to remember than a long list every Saturday. The maker balances the rooms so no day is much longer than another.
  3. Pick your rest days first. Planning a day off makes the other days feel doable, and a schedule you can keep beats a perfect one you drop.
  4. Spread the monthly jobs over four weeks. Cleaning the fridge in week one and the grout in week two means you never lose a whole weekend to cleaning.
  5. Put it where you will see it. Inside a kitchen cupboard door or on the fridge works well. Tick the boxes as you go; it is surprisingly motivating.

Weekly cleaning checklist by room

Kitchen

Clean the sink, wipe appliance fronts and the microwave, mop the floor and throw out old food from the fridge before the weekly shop.

Bathroom

Clean the toilet, sink, mirror and shower or tub, mop the floor and put out fresh towels. With two bathrooms, give each one its own day.

Bedrooms

Change the sheets, dust surfaces and vacuum. Doing this on the same day each week makes fresh sheets a habit.

Living room and entryway

Dust, vacuum floors and rugs, fluff cushions and shake out the doormat. The entryway takes five minutes and makes the whole home feel cleaner.

Questions and answers

How long should cleaning take each day?

For most homes, 20 to 30 minutes of daily basics plus 30 to 45 minutes on a cleaning day keeps things under control. The schedule maker shows the time for your own plan as you choose rooms and tasks.

What should be on a weekly cleaning schedule?

Cleaning the bathroom, changing bed sheets, vacuuming and mopping floors, dusting, wiping kitchen appliances and taking out the recycling. Daily jobs like dishes and wiping counters go on a separate everyday list.

How often should you clean the bathroom?

Clean the toilet, sink and shower once a week, and wash bath mats and the shower curtain once a month. A quick wipe of the sink every day or two keeps it from building up.

How often should you change your bed sheets?

Once a week is the usual advice, or every two weeks at most. Pillows and duvets need washing a few times a year.

Is the cleaning schedule maker free?

Yes. You can make and print as many schedules as you like with no sign-up. Your plan is saved only in your own browser.
